Someone said to me recently, “ seems like you have a lot of trust and uncertainty issues…” Well… duh- just like every other 22 year old woman in the world. Most women have trust issues thanks to Disney and Kate Middleton finding her own real life prince. A few hours later, I was talking to my mom about the observation. She then proceeded to tell me how I have always been someone to ‘doubt myself.’ I never mentioned doubt, however she interpreted uncertainty as doubt.
Is it fair to say if you have issues with one, you have issues with the other? Does uncertainty create doubt? I have been mulling over these questions the past few days as this has kind of struck me in an intriguing way. Here’s what, I think, I have come up with…
By definition, the words are two different entities. One describes the lack of evidence, as the other has some sort of negative connotation. But in today’s society uncertainty has created doubt. If we have uncertainty about where we are going in life, what our five year plan is, how we will pay off student loans, when we are starting a famiy, etc.., we are doubted as a person, doubted if we can handle responsibilities thrown at us. How in lord’s name IS THAT FAIR?
I have always had a life plan- ever since I can remember I was going to get out of my small town, enjoy a college experience, graduate with a degree from a Big Ten University. I was going to have a great job that I love, get married, and start a family. That was the plan… Well now I have graduated college with a degree, have a job that I love and am single. It tortured me that I did not fufill my life plan and because I had NO idea when I would be married and have kids, I considered myself a failure. But I have recently came to the realization that my life is pretty great.
Just because I have some uncertainty about my future does not mean I doubt my future, capabilities, or myself. I have a great future ahead of me, whatever it entails. We should start to realize as a society that uncertainty should provide spontaneity and fun in our lives. So yeah, is it important to know how you will pay off those loans? Absolutely. Is it important to know when I will buy a home? No. Absolutely not. Enjoy what comes your way and embrace new and unexpected experiences.
Easier said than done, but try it out. This small realization has given me a some relief and a little peace of mind lately.
